REPORTED SPEECH - 1


                          


She said, “I am happy.” (direct speech)

She said that she was happy. (reported/indirect speech)

She said to me, “I am happy.”
She told me that she was happy.

She said            :   Reporting Part
“I am happy” :   Speech Part

She said - said : Reporting Verb






THREE changes

1. Personal pronouns (First and second persons only - I, we, you)

No changes in third person

2. Tenses

3. Time and place words

He said, “I have done my homework today.”

He said that he had done his homework that day.

Rajeena said to me, “I can help you.”

Rajeena told me that she could help me.


       

                       


She said, “My husband can speak five language.”

She said that her husband could speak five languages.

Rahul said, “She has written five novels.”
Rahul said that she had written five novels.

Shalima said, “I wrote two novels last year.”

Shalima said that she had written two novels the previous year.



       

She said, “I wrote a short story yesterday.”
She said that she had written a short story the previous day.

Shamal said, “ I am going to the library this evening.”



Shamal said that he was going to the library that evening.

Radhika said, “This is a good English dictionary.”

Radhika said that it was a good English dictionary.

He said to me, “These novels are unputdownable.”

He told me that the novels were unputdownable.
