IT IS TIME ...................
പരീക്ഷകളില്‍ പലപ്പോഴും പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള ചോദ്യങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് It is time-ഉമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ചോദ്യം. It is time-നുശേഷം to-infinitive-ഉം sentence-ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയും.
It's time to learn car driving.
It's time for you to learn swimming.
It's time-നുശേഷം sentence ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാനുള്ളത്. പ്രസ്തുത വാക്യം present tense-ല്‍ വരരുത്. പകരം past tense-ല്‍ വരണം. എന്നാല്‍ അര്‍ത്ഥം present time-ലാണ് വരിക. സാധാരണ past tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് past time-നെ കാണിക്കാനാണെങ്കിലും ചില സന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങളില്‍ present time-നെ അഥവാ future time-നെ കാണിക്കാനും past tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന രീതി ഇംഗ്ലിഷില്‍ കാണാം. അവയിലൊന്നാണ് It is time-നുശേഷം വരുന്ന വാക്യം.
It is time you got married.
ഈ വാക്യത്തിന്റെ അര്‍ത്ഥം വരുന്നത് 'നീ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കേണ്ട സമയമായി' എന്നാണ്. ഇവിടെ got married-ന് വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു എന്ന അര്‍ത്ഥം വരുന്നില്ല. ഇതൊരു complex sentence ആണ്. കാരണം ഇവിടെ It is time, you got married എന്നിങ്ങനെ രണ്ടു വാക്യങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഇവയില്‍ ആദ്യവാക്യത്തിന് പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായ അര്‍ത്ഥം കിട്ടുകയും രണ്ടാമത്തേതിന് കിട്ടാതിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതിനാലാണ് ഇതൊരു complex sentence ആയി മാറുന്നത്. ഈ വാക്യത്തിന്റെ question tag വരുന്നത് ആദ്യവാക്യത്തില്‍ നിന്നാണ്.
It is time you got married, isn't it?
ഇതുപോലെ past tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന മറ്റു സന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്. Would rather, wish എന്നിവയാണവ.

Perfect tense-ല്‍ സമയത്തെ കാണിക്കുന്നയവസരത്തിലുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടു prepositions ആണ് for, since എന്നിവ. ഇവ ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാനുള്ളത് കാലയളവിനെ (period of time) സൂചിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ for-ഉം starting time-നെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ since-ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കണമെന്നതാണ്. ഇതോര്‍മ്മിക്കാന്‍ period-ലെ r എന്ന അക്ഷരം for-ല്‍ ഉണ്ടെന്നും starting-ലെ s എന്ന അക്ഷരം since-ല്‍ ഉണ്ടെന്നും മനസ്സിലാക്കിയാല്‍ മതി.
She has been studying English for the last five months.
She has been studying English since January last.
കാലയളവ് കാണിക്കുന്നതിനാല്‍ for-നുശേഷം seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years എന്നിവ വരും. എന്നാല്‍ ഇവയൊന്നും since-നുശേഷം വരില്ല.
ചിലപ്പോള്‍ since ഒരു conjunction ആയും പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്. അപ്പോള്‍ since-നുശേഷം വരുന്നത് ഒരു വാക്യമായിരിക്കും. പ്രസ്തുത വാക്യത്തില്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത് simple past tense ആണ്.
I haven't seen your sister since she left college.
