MUST or HAD TO?
Q: They said, 'We must finish the work in time.' Indirect speech is : They said they ...... finish the work in time.
ഇവിടെ must വരുമോ അതോ had to വരുമോ?
A: രണ്ടും ഉപയോഗിക്കാം.
ഇതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ചില കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ വിശദമാക്കാം.
Must രണ്ടു വിധത്തില്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കാം. ഒന്ന് obligation കാണിക്കാനാണ്. ഈ അവസരത്തില്‍ must-നൊപ്പം I, we എന്നിവയാണ് subject ആയി വരിക. ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ obligation വന്നാല്‍ must അതേപടി നിലനിര്‍ത്തുകയോ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ had to, would have to എന്നിവയിലേക്ക് മാറ്റുകയോ ചെയ്യാം.
She said, 'I must see the principal by 3 o'clock.'
She said that she must/had to/ would have see the principal by 3 o'clock.
രണ്ടാമത് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് inference, commands, prohibitions, advice എന്നിവ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ്. ഈയവസരത്തില്‍ must മാറ്റേണ്ടതില്ല.
Rohith said, 'My mother must be in the prayer hall.' (inference)
Rohith said that his mother must be in the prayer hall.
The teacher said, 'Students must obey the rules of the school.' (command)
The teacher said that students must obey the rules of the school.
My friend said, 'You must see a doctor if you have fever for more than two days.' (Advice)
My friend said that I must see a doctor if I had fever for more than two days.
The doctor said, 'You mustn't eat beef for three months.'
The doctor said that I mustn't eat beef for three months.
ഈ നിയമം ഓര്‍ക്കുക. എന്നാല്‍ PSC ഈ നിയമം തെറ്റിക്കുന്നതും കാണാം.
