SUBJECT - VERB AGREEMENT - 09









People, police, cattle, vermin, clergy, livestock:

Some people become very self-conscious in adolescence.

The police are trying to ascertain what really happened.

The cattle are allowed to wander freely.

The vermin on the body of the cow are to be removed.

All the local clergy were asked to attend the ceremony.

His livestock were killed by the heavy rains and flooding.

There + singular verb or plural verb:

There is a school near our club.

There are two schools near my house.


Country names + plural verb [Reporting of Sports and Games]: 

England have lost the Test series against India.

What clause [subject] + singular verb:

What I need is two English dictionaries.

What you said has annoyed her.

Group nouns + singular or plurar verb:

The Government is changing its policy.

The Government are changing their policy.

The crowd was/were shouting slogans.

The government is/are afraid of losing the coming election.

Other group nouns:

audience, orchestra, committee, assembly, parliament, team, class, club, family, public, gang, minitsry.

Remember 

ANY/NONE OF + PLURAL NOUN = Singular or Plural Verb

If any of my students COME/COMES, tell them I will reach there by 5.

None of the students HAS/HAVE attended the function today.
