ONE OF + PLURAL NOUN = SINGULAR VERB:
                 
 One of my friends has been preparing himself for the Civil Service Examination.

MORE THAN ONE + SINGULAR NOUN = SINGULAR VERB:

 More than one student is involved in the crime.

MORE THAN + PLURAL NOUN = PLURAL VERB:

 More than one hundred policemen have ringed the area.

MORE + PLURAL NOUN + THAN ONE = PLURAL VERB

 More students than one have helped her to solve her problem.

ONE OR TWO / ONE OR MORE + PLURAL NOUN = PLURAL VERB:

  One or two policemen have been killed in the attack.

One or more girls are absent today.
