HAD BETTER / HAD BEST
ഒരു കാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് നല്ലത് എന്ന് പറയുമ്പോഴും ഉപദേശം നല്‍കുമ്പോഴും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന പ്രയോഗമാണ് had better, had best എന്നിവ. ഇവയില്‍ കൂടുതലായും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് had better ആണ്. ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സാഹചര്യത്തെ മാത്രം സൂചിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് had better ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. പൊതുവായ ആശയത്തില്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ had better-നു പകരം should ആണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത്.
You are very tired. You had better go home and rest up a little.
(താന്‍ വളരെ ക്ഷീണിതനാണ്. താന്‍ വീട്ടില്‍ പോയി സ്വല്പം വിശ്രമിക്കുന്നതാണ് നല്ലത്/വിശ്രമിക്കണം.)
You should always tell the truth.
ഈ രണ്ടു വാക്യങ്ങള്‍ തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസം നോക്കുക. ആദ്യത്തെ വാക്യം പറയുന്ന ഉപദേശം specific ആണ്. എന്നാല്‍ രണ്ടാമത്തെ വാക്യം പറയുന്ന ഉപദേശം general ആണ്. ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സന്ദര്‍ഭത്തില്‍ മാത്രം സത്യം പറയേണ്ടതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ രണ്ടാമത്തെ വാക്യത്തില്‍ had better ഉപയോഗിക്കാം:
I think you had better tell your boss the truth. Otherwise, when he finds the truth, you may be sacked from your job.
Had better-നുശേഷം bare infinitive ഉപയോഗിക്കണം. അതായത്, base form of verb. You had better to see a doctor now എന്നത് തെറ്റാണ്. ഇവിടെ to see എന്നതിനു പകരം see എന്നു മാത്രമേ ഉപയോഗിക്കാവൂ:
You had better see a doctor now.
Had better എന്ന പ്രയോഗത്തിലെ had, have/has-ന്റെ past form ആയതിനാല്‍ had better സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് കഴിഞ്ഞ കാലത്തെയാണെന്ന് തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കരുത്. വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന കാലത്തെയാണ് had better സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഇംഗ്ലിഷില്‍ പലപ്പോഴും tense-ഉം time-ഉം തമ്മില്‍ ബന്ധമുണ്ടാകണമെന്നില്ല. Had better-നുപകരം has better എന്നോ have better എന്നോ ഉപയോഗിക്കാന്‍ പാടില്ല.
ശക്തമായ ഉപദേശം നല്‍കുമ്പോഴാണ് had better ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. ഉപദേശം സ്വീകരിക്കാതിരുന്നാല്‍ അതിന് negative result ഉണ്ടായേക്കുമെന്ന സൂചന had better-ല്‍ അടങ്ങുന്നു. ഇത് കൂടുതല്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നതിന് or ഉപയോഗിച്ച് negative result കാണിക്കാവുന്നതുമാണ്:
I had better take a taxi or I will be late for the company meeting.
Had better ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് negative-ല്‍ ആണെങ്കില്‍ hadn't better എന്നുപയോഗിക്കരുത്. പകരം had better not എന്നാണുപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത്:
You had better not tell your father about what happened in the class room.
എന്നാല്‍ ചോദ്യരൂപത്തിലുപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ hadn't better എന്നുപയോഗിക്കാം:
Hadn't you better inform the police of the accident?
Positive question ആണെങ്കില്‍ Had we better see the principal now? എന്നുപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
had better ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള വാക്യം direct speech-ല്‍നിന്നു indirect speech-ലേക്ക് മാറ്റേണ്ടിവരികയാണെങ്കില്‍ had better അതേപടിതന്നെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാല്‍ മതി:
She said, 'I had better consult a grammar book.'
She said (that) she had better consult a grammar book.
എന്നാല്‍ you had better എന്നാണ് direct speech-ല്‍ വരുന്നതെങ്കില്‍ indirect speech-ല്‍ had better അതേപടി നിലനിര്‍ത്തുകയോ advised എന്നുപയോഗിച്ച് മാറ്റിയെഴുതുകയോ ചെയ്യാം:
She said, 'You had better consult a doctor.'
She said (that) I had better consult a doctor.
She advised me to consult a doctor.
would rather
മുന്‍ഗണന (preference) കാണിക്കുന്നതിനാണ് would rather ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. Would rather-നുശേഷവും base form of verb ആണുപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത്:
I would rather have fish biriyani today.
(ഞാനിന്ന് മീന്‍ ബിരിയാണി കഴിക്കാനാണ് കൂടുതല്‍ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നത്.)
Would rather-നു പകരം would sooner എന്നും ഉപയോഗിക്കാം.
She would sooner join a spoken English class.
എന്നാല്‍ കൂടുതലായും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് would rather ആണ്.
Would rather-നുശേഷം than ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യുന്നത്:
I'd rather die than apologize to Babitha.
Would rather-ന്റെ negative ആയിട്ട് wouldn't rather എന്നുപയോഗിക്കാറില്ല. പകരം would rather not എന്നുപയോഗിക്കണം:
I sense that you would rather not marry your classmate.
Would rather-നുശേഷം ഒരു വാക്യം വരികയാണെങ്കില്‍ അത് past tense-ല്‍ ആയിരിക്കണം:
I would rather you sang some songs from Malayalam films.
ഇവിടെ sing എന്നുപയോഗിക്കരുത്. ഇവിടെ sang ഉപയോഗിച്ചതുകൊണ്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞ കാലത്തെയാണ് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കരുത്. പകരം present/future time-നെയാണ് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ കാലത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കണമെങ്കില്‍ simple past tense-നു പകരം past perfect tense ഉപയോഗിച്ചാല്‍ മതി:
I would rather I had sung some songs from Malayalam films.
Would rather എന്ന പ്രയോഗത്തിനു പകരം will rather എന്നൊരു പ്രയോഗമില്ലെന്ന കാര്യം ഓര്‍ക്കുക.
Would rather-നുശേഷം വരുന്ന വാക്യത്തില്‍ than ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ than-നുശേഷം വരുന്ന verb-ഉം past tense-ല്‍ ആയിരിക്കണം:
I would rather you danced than sang a song.
എന്നാല്‍ പലരും I would rather you danced than sing a song എന്നാണുപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. വ്യാകരണപരമായി നോക്കിയാല്‍ sang ആണ് ശരിയായ പ്രയോഗം. Would rather-നുശേഷം വരുന്ന വാക്യം past tense-ല്‍ ആവണമെന്ന നിയമം രണ്ടു വാക്യങ്ങള്‍ വന്നാല്‍ അവ രണ്ടിനും ബാധകമായിരിക്കും. I would rather you danced than you sang a song എന്ന പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായ വാക്യത്തില്‍ നിന്നും than-നുശേഷമുള്ള you ഒഴിവാക്കുക മാത്രമാണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്. അതിനാല്‍ sang തന്നെയാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത്. അല്ലാത്തപക്ഷം I would rather you danced than you sing a song എന്ന വാക്യത്തിന്റെ ഘടനയാണ് കിട്ടുക. ഈ വാക്യം തെറ്റാവുന്നതിനാലാണ് I would rather you danced than sing a song എന്ന വാക്യം വ്യാകരണപരമായി തെറ്റുന്നത്.
Would rather എന്ന അര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍തന്നെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന വാക്കാണ് prefer. Would rather-നുശേഷം than ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ prefer-നുശേഷം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് to ആണെന്ന വ്യത്യാസം മനസ്സിലാക്കണം:
My sister would rather read than watch TV.
My sister prefers reading to watching TV.
Prefer-നുശേഷം noun-ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കാം. എന്നാല്‍ would rather-നുശേഷം verb മാത്രമേ ഉപയോഗിക്കാവൂ:
Shalima prefers coffee to tea.
Shalima would rather drink coffee than tea.
വിനയത്തോടെ ഒരാളോട് ഒരു കാര്യം ചെയ്യാന്‍ അഥവാ ചെയ്യാതിരിക്കാന്‍ പറയുമ്പോള്‍ I would prefer it if എന്ന് പ്രയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്:
I would prefer it if you didn't smoke in front of the children.
ഇവിടെ don't smoke എന്നുപയോഗിച്ചാല്‍ വ്യാകരണപരമായി വാക്യം തെറ്റാവും.
